The New Forest is bordered to the east by Southampton Water and to the south by the Solent. Both provide many opportunities for sea fishing from local beaches.
Deep waters off Hurst Spit, for example, can apparently yield cod, dogfish, conger, pouting, garfish, mackerel, dabs and plaice; whilst the shore alongside Pennington Marshes can provide smoothhounds, stingray, pout, bass and, in winter, flounder and whiting.
