New Forest Villages in old pictures

The New Forest has for generations been a fertile ground for artists and photographers, who have left behind a large body of work depicting the New Forest and its villages in times gone by.

Click on the thumbnails below to see a full page view of the same intriguing image. Some are from the pages of antiquarian books; others come from equally aged magazines, whilst many of the remainder are from early post cards.

Apart from an absence of traffic, the presence of commoners' stock in Lyndhurst, and markedly different fashions, the New Forest villages have remained refreshingly unchanged.
